Our Fall 2024 issue considers the duality of travel as a source of challenge and comfort. There’s the challenge of distance—a castaway island in Indonesia reachable only by seaplane—and of the nerves: a whitewater ride through the Grand Canyon, Siena’s heart-stopping Palio race. Challenges can be transformative, as in sailing Italy’s Pontine islands on an all-women’s culinary retreat, or a deep-dive into the traditional textile culture of rural Vietnam. But the comfort of the calm and familiar always calls: a crisp fall day in Stockholm with the air scented of cardamom buns, a serene monastery-hotel in Nice, a beloved rental home in Maine.
